Bradburyesque Announces Call for Submissions of Work Inspired by Ray Bradbury

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Chicago, IL – Legendary writer Ray Bradbury worked across genres and disciplines, inspiring generations of artists in literature, visual art, film, and music. His career spanned over 70 years and continues to inform our culture with its visionary ideas and lyrical language. Books like Fahrenheit 451, The Martian Chronicles, and many others, have become essential fixtures in the landscape of literature.

To celebrate his birthday, Aug. 22, 2016, Bradburyesque emerges as a special Ray Bradbury-focused issue of online literary journal Goreyesque (www.goreyesque.com). The editors encourage writers and artists to send submissions of short stories, essays, poetry, visual art, short film, music, and other art. The deadline for submissions is Apr. 22, 2016 (full guidelines are available at: www.goreyesque.com/submission-guidelines).

Bradburyesque will feature work inspired by the themes, styles, and tone of Bradbury’s writing. It will be guest edited by journalist and author Sam Weller, whose role as Bradbury’s authorized biographer and friend produced the definitive studies of his life and career: The Bradbury Chronicles; Listen to the Echoes; and Ray Bradbury: The Last Interview.

“I’m absolutely thrilled to be working with the incredible team at Goreyesque on their off-shoot celebration of Ray Bradbury,” said Weller. “Ray Bradbury was a writer who fearlessly worked across media and I know that Bradburyesque will celebrate this great man and his unprecedented imagination in myriad and exciting ways!”

Weller and author Mort Castle co-edited Shadow Show: All-New Stories in Celebration of Ray Bradbury, a 2012 Bram Stoker Award-winning anthology (and now a comic book series by IDW) featuring Bradbury-inspired work by noted authors such as Neil Gaiman, Audrey Niffenegger, and Margaret Atwood. Prompted by the spirit of Shadow Show, as well as that of Goreyesque, Weller and the editors wish to showcase work by emerging writers and artists alongside established professionals.

For every artist influenced by Bradbury’s motto “Live forever!” this is a rare opportunity to participate in a project that seeks to expand on the beauty of Shadow Show, move beyond the page, and create a forum to celebrate the work of a literary icon.

Chicago, IL - Columbia College Chicago’s Department of Creative Writing is launching a new online literary journal, Goreyesque (www.goreyesque.com), now open to all for submissions.

Both an homage and showcase of contemporary artists and storytellers inspired by Edward Gorey’s lasting influence across genres, Goreyesque seeks works that are darkly humorous, surreal, playful, and anything in between. Short stories, essays, poems, illustrations, video/animation and other forms of art all welcome. Original work is preferred, but reprints that fit the project’s scope are also appreciated (see submission guidelines). Contributors do not have to be students to submit.

While Elegant Enigmas has traveled the country since 2009, the companion exhibition G is for Gorey provides an even closer in-depth look at Gorey’s legacy, including his illustrations for book jackets and magazine articles, and his life and work on Cape Cod.

Gorey’s artwork returns to his home town for the first time with this special exhibition and reading/performance showcase, so writers and artists should be sure to send Gorey-inspired work soon! All works submitted before Apr. 14 will be considered for a public reading and showcase at LUMA’s gallery space in Chicago on Apr. 29. Top 5 submissions will also receive the exhibition catalogue Elegant Enigmas: The Art of Edward Gorey.

Special guest judges for the reading: Sam Weller, author of The Bradbury Chronicles, and Mort Castle, author of Bram Stoker award-winning New Moon on the Water. Both served as co-editors of Stoker award-winning Shadow Show: All New Stories in Celebration of Ray Bradbury.

CTLGroup Saddened by the Loss of W. Gene Corley

From CTLGroup's website.

CTLGroup, an expert engineering and materials science firm located in Skokie, Illinois, is saddened by the news that W. Gene Corley, Ph.D., S.E., P.E., Senior Vice President, died on March 1, 2013 after a brief battle with cancer. With a legendary career that spanned over 50 years, Dr. Corley developed his structural engineering expertise at CTLGroup and its predecessor, the Portland Cement Association. His diverse work included applied research, structural evaluations and repairs and structural forensic investigations.

Dr. Corley, dubbed the "preeminent expert on building collapse investigations and building codes" by the American Society of Engineers (ASCE), built his reputation as one of the world's experts on structures damaged by natural and manmade disasters as he investigated some of the most notable building failures in recent U.S. history. As Team Leader, he directed the FEMA investigation into the September 11, 2001 collapse of the World Trade Center's twin towers.

A recognized industry leader, Dr. Corley was at the forefront of the structural engineering profession and the development of building codes and standards. He served in key leadership roles of numerous technical and professional organizations. Gene was a Fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers where he helped establish the Structural Engineering Institute and served as Chair of the Technical Council on Forensic Engineering. He was also a Fellow of the American Concrete Institute where he served as Chair of the Institute's Committee 318, Structural Concrete Building Code. Gene was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 2000, one of the highest distinctions accorded to an engineer, for his leadership in raising the standards of the engineering profession for building and bridge construction.

"The management and staff of CTLGroup want to acknowledge Gene's contributions to the firm and his exemplary technical and professional accomplishments," said Jeffrey L. Garrett, Ph.D., S.E., CTLGroup President & CEO. "Gene's legacy in the structural engineering profession is unparalleled. He was an innovative thought leader who consistently contributed generous amounts of his time and knowledge to the profession."

Dr. Corley's leadership in the development of CTLGroup's forensic engineering capabilities laid the foundation for CTLGroup to become the expert consulting engineering and materials science firm that it is today.
